Janssen Pharmaceutica cooperates with Russian NewVac – the symptom of Russian pharmaceutical market evolution

On January 7th NewVac, the subsidiary of ChemRar High Tech Center (a Russian non-governmental R&D center for life sciences), announced a co-license agreement with Janssen Pharmaceutica, a pharmaceutical company of Johnson & Johnson. According to the contract NewVacs receives the exclusive rights for the development and commercialization of Janssen’s quisinostat, an experimental solid tumor drug, in Russia and in several eastern European countries.

Quisinostat is a second-generation Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor (HDACi), a type of compounds, which interferes with the function of histone deacetylase. Histone deacetylases are molecules that remove acetyl groups from lysine residues resulting in condensed and transcriptionally inactive chromatin. The action of HDACi is the inhibition of tumour cells proliferation.
The Russian company will develop quisinostat together with the provision of R&D support to clinical trials. Janssen, in turn, will be responsible for expertise in external global clinical tests.
In a news release published on the company’s website Nikolay Savchuk, the Chairman of the Board of NewVac, says: “Our goal is to create an innovative world-class biomedical platform for the treatment of oncologic diseases based on molecularly targeted compounds including, but not limited to immunological cancer therapies in Russia”. “NewVac will initiate solid tumor combination therapy studies, which are accompanied by translational efforts. We are honored to commit our research organization to such a noble cause and we plan to start and conduct those clinical studies in Russia in 2013” – continues Savchuk.
Pharmaceutical industry in Russia is being influenced by government subsidies as well as thanks to the international cooperation. “Russia will develop the domestic pharmaceutical industry in order to decrease the country’s dependency on foreign medicines”, said President Dmitry Medvedev in 2010. In 2009 the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade adopted a strategy called Pharma 2020. According to the policy, the government helps the local companies to increase the production of innovative medicines by covering the costs of R&D. One of the strategy’s objectives (which are planned to be attained by 2020) is to augment the share of locally produced medicines up to 50% on the internal market and to increase the pharmaceutical products export by eight times compared to 2008. It is assumed that the return of the investment should commence in 2017 principally through lower prices of domestically produced generics and innovative medicines purchase in the framework of public procurement.
The example of Janssen, as well as other foreign companies, shows that the Russian strategy provides favourable conditions to invest in Russia. If the goals of the Pharma 2020 are reached, Russian pharmaceutical industry will become a significant player on the international market.
