Life science sector in the next 15 years
Life science sector comprising such areas as biotechnology, pharmacy or biomedical technologies is one of the most rapidly growing markets. As societies all over the world are getting older and older, we can be sure that in the nearest 15 years its development will be even faster than nowadays.

The life sciences are focused on the investigation of living organisms and provide crucial solutions that improve the quality of our life in various aspects e.g. health. With the development of novel technologies, in the recent years life science sector gained its momentum and became one of the fastest growing industries in the world.
In the next 15 years it is expected that the growth will be even more significant. There are several reasons for that. The most important factor that will trigger further development of life science sector is aging of the societies all over the world. Average life expectancy in countries belonging to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2012 was 80 years and is expected to increase gradually. Hence, the expenditure on the whole healthcare system with all associated medical branches will definitely mount. For example, it is estimated that the total global pharmaceutical spending will increase by 6.9% a year between 2014-2018.
What we can expect in the next 15 years is that life science sector will provide lots of diverse products targeted more specifically against particular diseases, which will be a shift towards personalized medicine. Better understanding of molecular events and genetic landscapes of various disorders will be associated with more efficient therapies. Novel approaches such as stem cells or gene therapy are one of the most promising hopes for patients with incurable diseases.
Among medical branches, the oncology is expected to remain the major area of interest and increasing spending. The occurrence of cancer as a disease of primarily older people is expected to grow. Therefore, a particular emphasis will be placed on research that can provide small molecules or antibodies for its treatment. Importantly, advances in genetic testing and molecular cancer markers’ detection will contribute to better prophylactics and diagnosis. Together with the development of life sciences, all bioethical and legislation issues should not be excluded from the consideration. Only in such a way technology can serve humans in a proper way.
