Regenerative medicine
Somatic stem cells are found to have an application in regenerative medicine. They are used more often to rebuilt damaged structures of the tissues or whole organs. This is the type of stem cells, that are present in adult human body in comparison to embryonic stem cells. They have the ability to transform into differentiated cells with defined functions characteristic for the tissue or the organ. In clinical practice they have been used for more than 40 years.

The progress of cell therapy and regenerative medicine correlates with more prevalent stem cells use. Unique features of those cells, for example the ability to differentiate and gaining the functions of fully functional, mature cells of particular tissue or organ are the basis for their application in treatment of many diseases. Actual application of stem cells is test in therapies in neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease or Huntington’s disease but also in strokes or injuries of spinal cord.
Many years of research within the properties and regenerative capabilities of stem cells prove that one of the unique feature of stem cells is the ability of differentiation and de-differentiation into cells of probably every tissue or organ. Regenerative medicine is relatively young area of science but is rapidly developing and becomes increasingly important.
What exactly is regenerative medicine answers Professor Graziella Pellegrini.
The purpose of the method is to replace the damage structures such as parts of organs or tissues by new, newly differentiated cells and cellular structures in order to reconstruction and regeneration of the organ, thus to return to proper, physiological functioning. In whole regenerative therapy are used stem cells and methods of tissue engineering.
Regenerative medicine solves the problem of deficit amount of organ capable to transplant and patients waiting for that kind of surgery. This problem is noted around the world and is the reason to invent new, alternative methods of obtaining the tissue grafts and organs which allow possible fast regeneration of the destroyed structures.
